Colored Woman

The black woman is not tragically colored. There is no great sorrow damned in her soul or lurking behind her eyes. She does not hold that nature somehow has given her a lowdown dirty deal. Zora Neale Hurston wrote similar words in her short essay "How it Feels to Be Colored Me." The photo series sets to redefine the black woman by not binding her to any concrete definition. The photographer illustrates the progressions of the black woman from a person of color defined by physical traits such her clothes, body, and blackness to an individual defined by intangible traits such as her personality and emotion. The subject is developed on as the series continues. In the last photo a face claims the previously pictured material and physical traits.

"I have seen that the world is to the strong regardless of a little pigmentation more of less. No, I do not weep at the world--I am too busy sharpening my oyster knife."
~Zora Neale Hurston.

Photography by...Rog Walker

Rog Walker's photography has a certain intensity to it. I can only compare it to the feeling of when someone who you take seriously tells you they need to have a talk with you. You go in feeling like your stomach is crawling up your throat and then when you finally hear what they have to say...it's great news. It's the greatest piece of news you've gotten in a while. You feel elated yet still sober. That's the intensity Rog Walker's photography makes me feel. His photos are also a good source of style inspiration. Some of the subject Rog captures in these photos are: Joshua and Travis of Street Etiquette, his wife-Bee Walker, and musician Jesse Boykins III.

Photography By...André Supa

(click through)

I became familiar with André Supa's work via Tumblr, his Tumblr to be more specific. His photographs are amazing and each one is distinct in its own way. My personal and recent favorite photograph of his is the side profile he did of Rapper A$AP Rocky. I just love how he took A$AP and molded him into an André Supa creation. In the picture he is no longer A$AP Rocky but "A$AP Rocky" by André Supa. I would describe Supa's photographs as minimalist and avant-garde. He really captures the saying "a picture is worth a thousand words," or in his case "a picture inspires a thousand expressions."
